A brief note
Argentina is bordered by the Andes in the west and the South Atlantic Ocean to the east, neighbouring countries are Chile to the west, Bolivia and Paraguay to the north, and Brazil and Uruguay to the northeast. We offer a North West Argentina Geology and Geography Tour that will take you into the heart of our breathtaking region to explore some of nature’s finest landscapes.
In terms of area, Argentina is the second largest country of South America after Brazil, and the 8th largest country in the world. Its total area is approximately 2.7 million km²
The Argentine Northwest is comprised of very distinct geographical and climatic regions. These consist of The Altiplano or “Puna”, the High Mountains of the Andes, Spectacular Canyons and fertile valleys as well as the subtropical cloud forest or “Yungas”.
To the east of the Salta region lays the “impenetrable” Chaco known as such due to its endless stretches of thorny trees and bushes that continue all the way to the border with Paraguay.
Besides the Yungas jungle on the eastern fringe of the region, the only fertile lands are those near the river basins, which have been irrigated extensively. Across millennia the erosive forces of these rivers has gradually created a multitude of canyons that contain some of the most impressive rock structures in the world.
West of these valleys the peaks of the Andes reach heights of over 6,000 metres (20,000 ft.) above sea level.

Gareth picked us up and off we went…up into the mountains: Quebrada de Humahuaca, overnighting in Tilcara. It was great having a personal English speaking guide who ensured we did the sorts of things that interested us. Day 2 the awesomeness continued, visiting Salinas Grandes and Purmamarca …before the drive back to Salta airport in plenty of time for our flight! Thankyou !
